Week 02: Film and New Media

Class Task and Information

  • Lesson 01:
    • Symbolic Codes Teaching Tours - Ads that make a difference.
      • Students will be placed into random groups around the room
      • You will be given a focus task and ad for review.
      • Students will refine the solutions to create a resource for all.

      • GROUPS:
        • Students will need to record their discussions on the A3 paper supplied to each group.
        • You will need to elect a scribe for the task (someone to write down the points).
        • Groups are not to share information.
        • There will be time limits and instructions in class.


      • Random Group Generator (Class will split at random into 5 groups)

      • Elect the following people using a dice roll: (Digital dice Roll 3D)

        • First person to roll the following numbers will do:
          1. Scribe for the group
          2. Proof reader
          3. Reporter for the group
          4. Leader
          5. Wild Card - the motivator / outside the box
          6. Roll again

        • Record the person and their function in the group

          • Discussion and work clock




        • Setting (Group 1)
          • Place the name of the people in the group and nominate a scribe.
          • Create a criteria for analyzing the ad by looking through he lens of SETTING.
          • This will be the categories you would like to talk about to meet the criteria
          • Review your categories with the definition from lesson 1 of the week.
          • Review the required Ad.
          • Discuss and record your responses to justify your analysis for each criteria.



        • Mise en scene (Group 2)
          • Place the name of the people in the group and nominate a scribe.
          • Students are to look at the visual hierarchy of the ad
          • What elements are in the Back-ground, Mid-ground and Fore-ground?
          • Identify the significant items and the relationship to the product and story convention.
          • Discuss and record your responses to justify your analysis for each criteria.



        • Acting (Group 4)
          • Place the name of the people in the group and nominate a scribe.
          • Create a criteria for analyzing the ad by looking through he lens of ACTING.
          • Discuss and record your responses to justify your analysis for each criteria.


        • Colour (Group 5)
          • Place the name of the people in the group and nominate a scribe.
          • Create a criteria for analyzing the ad by looking through he lens of COLOUR.
          • Discuss and record your responses to justify your analysis for each criteria.

            Further Instructions will be given out in class.

      • Story conventions are common narrative structures and understandings that are common in story telling media products. Examples of story conventions include:

        • Narrative structures
        • Cause and effect
        • Character construction
        • Point of View

      • There once was a character called....... Each day...... Until one day........ Because of that.... This happens..... And then this happens...... until finally........

    • Video Tutorial Files -= What to Do =-
      • You will need to view the video file and stop it along the way so you can implement, do what the video files shows you.

      • Remember: Information Action = KNOWLEDGE

      • Remember to save your work as you go.
