Week 01: Game Psychology, Design and Development

Class Task and Information

  • Lesson 01:
    • Students are to bring to class:
      • Charged laptops
      • Headphones
      • A5 or A4 programming note book to take notes. 

        • Welcome and Introduction
        • Class Expectations
        • Playing games in class and at school - the short overview



    • The function of Shared With Teacher -



    • Task 01 - Homework - Students are to download and install Unity Personal Student
      • Note you will be required to make a Unity Account to access the software and Unity Store




    • Class Lecture:
      • What is a Game?
      • What are the requirements of a game?

    • Task 02: Game Developers Journal Entry
      1. Play the game long enough to understand the directions and the overall objective(s) of the game.
      2. Produce a Game Modification Task Sheet document by identifying the following:
        • What platform is used to play the game?
        • What is the objective of the game?
        • What three things do you like about the game?
        • What three things did you not like about the game?
        • List three reasons why you think this game is popular and successful.
      3. Based on your own observations, create a written plan for modifying the game. This document will serve as your Game Modification Plan.
        Your plan should include the following:
        • Re-write the main goal of the game.
        • Describe how you would improve the game. Be as specific as possible!
        • List three reasons why your ideas may not have been implemented by the original designers.
        • List three reasons why you think players would like your changes.
        • List three reasons why these changes would be difficult to implement.



  • Lesson 02:
    • Students should have Unity Installed. Issues will be resolved during the lesson.

    • Game Developers Journal Entry - Class review.
      • Students are to from small groups of 4 to review their responses as a master copy.
      • The results of the discussion will be handed into Mr Marsden and feed back to the class.



    • Learning objective: Advantages of computer games over traditional entertainment and games.

      • A game needs a goal
