Week 03: Design Technologies and Materials

Class Task and Information

  • Lesson 01:
      • What is Solder Made of?
      • The Soldering Process
      • Wetting and Tinning
      • Intermetallic Bonds

    • Class Presentation:
    • The Big Question: What are Intermetallic Bonds?
      • Intermetallic compounds are formed from electro-positive and electronegative metals which chemically bond to form compounds with a specific composition and crystalline structure.

    • Practical #1 - Paper clip soldering task
      • Students are to take images of their person and upload to SWT (Share With Teacher)
      • Try to include a photo of your best solder joint - you will need to do a close up as best you can.

      • Use a piece of masking tape to put your name on your work and give to Mr Marsden

  • Lesson 02 :
      • Workshop Safety
      • Complete Paper clip practical

    • Learning intention: Workshop Safety
      • Students are to focus on the setting up of practicals and the packing up of practicals.

    • Practical #1 - Paper clip soldering task

    • When finished
      • Check your soldering:
        • Bonded the two materials together
        • Does the bond surround the joint
        • Size of the bond (amount of solder) appropriate
        • Shape of the bond (does it form and flow to the correct shape)

      • Students are to take images of their person and upload to SWT (Share With Teacher)

      • Try to include a photo of your best solder joint - you will need to do a close up as best you can.

      • Place your product in the plastic bag with your name it and give this to Mr Marsden for checking.

  • Lesson 03 :
      • The function of a resistor
      • Types of resistors
      • Reading resistor values
      • Resistor symbols
      • Recognise common engineering quantities, SI units and symbols

    • Class presentation 01: Resistors Power Point

    • Can you calculate the following resistors:
      • (4 Band) Yellow / Purple / Brown / Silver
      • (4 Band) Red / Yellow / Brown / Gold
      • (5 Band) Grey / Orange / Red / Purple / Silver

    • Resistor practice site: Try to solve the random resistor on this page

    • Write out 15 different resistor colours and answers from the website.

Readings / Homework
  • Revise - Reading resistor values.
