Week 04: IDEAS - Design Technology

Class Task and Information

  • Lesson 01:
    • Investigate how digital systems represent text, image and audio data in binary (ACTDIK024)
      • explaining that characters in text correspond to numbers defined by the character set
      • converting between decimal and 8-bit (1 byte) unsigned binary, covering whole numbers typically used for characters and RGB, for example 65 in decimal is 01000001 in 8-bit binary
      • explaining ways media elements are presented, for example the difference between embedded and linked media elements

    • In today’s lesson we will look at how we can change and encode messages like a computer.

    • How do computer process information?
      • Video Tutorial Files -= What to Do =-
        • You will need to view the video file and stop it along the way so you can implement, do what the video files shows you.

        • Remember: Information Action = KNOWLEDGE

        • Remember to take notes in your Design Book as you go.

      • Adafruit founder Limor Fried and program manager Federico Gomez Suarez explain how computers represent numbers, text, images, and sound using tiny electric signals.

      • Task 01:
        • Write out the Decimal number system
        • Write out the Binary number system
        • Draw the decimal number system
        • Copy the following Base 2 number system table into your Design Books:

        • Task 02:
        • Decipher the following binary message back to ASCII: - Keep it hidden until everyone has an answer.

        01001001 01000100 01000101 01000001 01010011 00100000 01010011 01100101 01101101 01100101 01110011 01110100 01100101 01110010 00100000 00110001 00100000 00110010 00110000 00110010 00110000

        • Task 3: Can you convert the following decimal numbers into Binary? (you will need to use the table)
          • 15
          • 27
          • 72
          • 164

        • Task 4: Create a binary message for you friend to decipher. (Document will be given out in class)

  • Lesson 02:
      • Do you have any questions for Mr Marsden? You can ask any question about the work from the previous lesson. You could also ask him a question to check his knowledge.

You will have 15 minutes at each station:
